While tying up some loose ends for my annual fishing trip with my old childhood friend Ned, which is coming up next month, I was thinking about our trip to fish the Missouri River near Helena, Montana, a couple of years ago. I may have mentioned before that I organize an annual trip for Ned and I to some classic fly fishing water in the west. Even though we’ve been friends since childhood and were avid fly fishermen, we had never fished together. This year we’re spending a week in northeastern New Mexico. We’ll be spending one day floating the San Juan and wade fishing the next. We will then drive to Taos, where we will fish the best of the waters in the area. We’ll have a guide for each of those days. I’m very much looking forward to this trip, as the state slogan says, “New Mexico is the Land of Enchantment.”
Following are some of images from our trip a few years ago to the mighty MO near Helena, MT. By the way, if anyone is interested in a trip to fish the MO, feel free to contact me, and I can outline an itinerary that I know you would like, plus put you in touch with an outfitter that can make arrangements for guides and recommend lodging, etc. This is a great couples trip. Even though I don’t get any remuneration for this, and I am happy to point you in the right direction to what I know is a great trip.
Greg is not overstating the fishing on the Missouri out of Craig, MT. I live on the Yellowstone in Paradise Valley and while The Stone cannot be beat for viewing natural beauty, The Missouri cannot be beat for catching lots of trout...and big trout. My son and I just fished it last week and it was an out of sight great fishing experience...which is why it is always one of our early Spring Montana fishing destination.
